Today I pledge to do my BEST. I will respect others. I will look at ways to grow and improve. My life makes a difference at Northwood Elementary.

Home Access Center
Home Access Center is just around the corner!
Parents, you received information regarding the new parent portal (Home Access Center) exclusively built for you by the school system. The attached pdf is now on the FCS website. Detailed instructions for this process will be sent very soon. Sites will have the ability to consolidate all students within the household so that parents will have a single login. The county will be creating the parent logins and passwords, which will distributed by the schools.
New This Year: Volunteer Registration Form
Dear Parents,
RE: New This Year: Volunteer Registration form
School board now requires a completed Volunteer Registration Form for all volunteers who will work directly with students. All adults who wish to work with Northwood students will be required to complete a form that will be kept on file in the school. The policy also requires that school staff check the List of Registered Sex Offenders provided by the state of Georgia for all volunteers. Designated school staff has to check a box on the form to indicate that the registry has been checked and the person is clear to volunteer. Please find attached the Volunteer Registration and the Q and A document in English and Spanish.
During the upcoming Sneak Preview day please complete the volunteer registration form along with other paperwork. Feel free to complete forms on behalf of your extended family members who may choose to volunteer at the school.
Regards,
Ritu Ahuja

ALL PRO DAD
Northwood is EXCITED to implement the All Pro Dad program this year!
All Pro Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria or a local restaurant. During this time, they discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and are equipped with resources to strengthen their relationship.
For more about All Pro Dad’s Day, please visit the Northwood All Pro Dad's webpage at http://www.allprodad.com/dd/2061
MUSIC MATTERS
Dear Parents,
Music Matters is thrilled at the opportunity to offer After School Band and Orchestra (ASBO) starting in the Fall of 2010. Institution of these programs is contingent on several factors. We will provide the opportunity for each school to participate, but these things must happen:
Enrollment - if we do not get at least 15 children for each class, then we will have to consider postponing until there is higher enrollment.
Teacher Availability – Execution of these programs requires a very large number of part-time teachers. To have solid programs also requires us to be selective. If we have a full class enrolled but no teacher available, we will continue searching for a teacher and begin the classes when one is found.
Classroom Assistant – Each class (4 per school) will require a classroom assistant. We are asking the parents with kids that are interested in the program to fill these positions. We offer them free tuition and instrument rental for their help once/week. Please distribute the attached description to your parents and let them know this opportunity is available. If we have 15 kids in a class, and none of the parents want to do this, then we will need help from the school and the community to fill this position. Without a classroom assistant, we cannot have a class.

Parent News
It is my pleasure and honor to introduce the newest member of our administrative team, our Assistant Principal Ms. Nikol Boyd. As you can glean from her introduction below she is a seasoned teacher as well an experienced administrator. I got an opportunity to speak with administrators who have served with Ms. Boyd and they had the utmost praise for her work ethic and passion for education. I am thrilled to have her on our team and would like to extend her a warm welcome.

A message from Ms. Boyd
“It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal of Northwood Elementary School. I am very eager to meet and learn about every student and staff member in our school as we work together to effectively educate all students. My passion and love for education will serve as the driving force as I support parents and teachers in helping every child at Northwood achieve their personal BEST.
I am married and have two wonderful daughters, Najah and Amirah. I was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and I am a HUGE Washington Redskins Fan!! I attended Morgan State University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. I began my teaching career working in Howard County Schools. While teaching, I obtained my Masters Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. I taught fourth and fifth grades in Howard County, Maryland for 6 years before moving to Georgia in 2003. Upon arriving in Georgia, I also taught fourth and fifth grades at Shakerag Elementary School. After 10 years of teaching, I left the classroom to become the Curriculum Support Teacher (CST) at Cogburn Woods Elementary School where I have been for the past 3 years.
I feel extremely fortunate to become a member of the Northwood family. As Assistant Principal, my goal is to work collaboratively to support students, teachers, staff, and parents. I look forward to working side by side with the committed staff and parents of our school to successfully educate ALL students!”

Family Summer Updates
Dear Parents and Students,
Re: 2009-2010 Fifth Grade Class Gift Formal Presentation Ceremony
As tradition has it, every year the graduating fifth grade students graciously present the school with an unforgettable gift. On August 19, 2010 after Sneak Peak at 6:30 PM we will have a special ceremony to formally present the fifth grade gift to Northwood ES.
This year’s gift is truly memorable and is visually stunning as well. Mr. Douglas Barron (2009-2010 fifth grade parent) has singlehandedly created a masterpiece that represents the spirit of Northwood Elementary. Yes, it is none other than the model of our logo “The Northwood Explorer/Biplane.”
We would love to see all our 2009-2010 students with their families at this presentation ceremony. Mr. Barron will be in attendance as well. The ceremony will be held in the open area next to Riverwalk/Explorervision. We will start at 6:30 so that everyone can get back home for dinner. So come back to school once more before you get busy with middle school activities.
Regards,
Ritu Ahuja
