Both the Northwood PTA and the Northwood Foundation serve a common purpose–to support Northwood’s pursuit of excellence.  The PTA has a base of support that consists of parents, family members, teachers, staff, and local businesses.  Their strength is derived from within the Northwood family.  The general membership elects an executive board to make decisions concerning educational programs, financial expenditures, and activities.  Donations to this organization can be in many forms.  They basically fall into two major categories: monetary and voluntary.  Proceeds are returned to the school population through teacher grants, assemblies, and social functions for the children.
    The Northwood Foundation was established to target financial support from outside the Northwood community.  The Board is currently comprised of community leaders, the school principal, and a PTA liaison.  The Board of Trustees submits grant requests to local charitable organizations and corporations.  Unlike the PTA, this is a tax-exempt, educational fund.  Donations to the Foundation can be in many different forms, as diverse as real estate, stock, art work, or monetary contributions, including matching gifts from employers of Northwood parents.
    Donations to Northwood resulting from the Foundation’s efforts can be used to supplement areas for which additional funding is required.  One example is the $5,000 donation toward staff development given to Northwood in February 2000.  In the 2000-01 school year, the Foundation raised enough money for almost every classroom at Northwood to receive a new computer.  In recent years, the Northwood Foundation provided money for approximately 25 ActivBoards for state of the art teaching tools. Our goal is for every classroom to have an ActivBoard. The Foundation offers Northwood another avenue through which special funding can be obtained.
    With both of these organizations’ efforts, it is clear to many how special Northwood has become in its very short existence.  These two groups will continue to work with Mrs. Michael and the Northwood staff to ensure that the quality of education received here at Northwood is the BEST that it can be.
