A typical day in second grade is...

  • Language arts group with reading and writing centers
  • Snack time
  • Math groups with center time
  • Lunch
  • Time for recess
  • Science and social studies
  • Health
  • Specials (taught by our special area teachers)
    • PE (twice a week)
    • Music (once a week)
    • Art (once a week)

Did you know...

  • Second graders may check out three books at a time from the media center.
  • Your child will go to the computer lab at least twice a month.
  • Each child learns beginning research skills and oral presentation skills.
And these things get bigger and better...
  • Books, desks, and chairs
  • Spelling words (15-20 words per story)
  • Stories we read and write
  • Math sense grows to include telling time, counting change, 3-digit numbers, introduction to multiplication
A "Sneak Peek" into Second Grade...
     Over the summer, you can help prepare your child for second grade by encouraging him/her to
  • Read simple books.
  • Read for meaning.
  • Stress reading for understanding.
  • Write stories including complete sentences, capital letters, and punctuation.
  • Work/Play with addition and subtraction facts through sums of 20.
  • Relate math to everyday life. For example, use time and money whenever you can.
  • Reinforce organizational skills
  • Stress responsibility of his/her own things.
  • Remind him/her of strengths, build confidence, and compliment your child frequently.
